What is pide? Turkish pide is a boat-shaped flatbread, topped and baked in a hot oven. First, a baker shapes leavened dough into a long oval. Then they add toppings like cheese, minced meat or vegetables. Next, they fold the edges and bake it until golden. Finally, they slice it to share. Many people call it Turkish pizza.
In this guide, we explain where Turkish pide comes from and what goes on it. We also cover the popular types and how it differs from lahmacun. Finally, we show you where to try it in Kuala Lumpur.
The origin of Turkish pide
Turkish pide has a long history across Anatolia. In fact, bakers have made boat-shaped breads there for centuries. Over time, each region added its own toppings. Today, pide is a staple in kebab houses everywhere. Still, its Anatolian roots remain clear.
What is Turkish pide made of?
So what goes into pide? It starts with a few simple parts:
- Dough: leavened and hand-shaped into a boat.
- Cheese: usually melted mozzarella.
- Toppings: minced beef, cubed meat, chicken or vegetables.
- Finishing touches: egg or fresh herbs, depending on the style.
Together, these parts create a warm, satisfying bread. Above all, the stone oven gives it a crisp base.
Popular types of Turkish pide
There are many types of pide to enjoy. At Lalezar, our menu includes several favourites:
- Kusbasi pide: minced beef and melted mozzarella.
- Tavuklu pide: chicken, capsicum and cheese.
- Mix pide: beef, chicken and mozzarella.
- Vegetarian pide: fresh vegetables and herbs.
So there is a pide for every taste. Meanwhile, the cheese ties every version together.
Pide vs lahmacun: what’s the difference?
People often confuse pide with lahmacun. However, they are quite different. Pide has thick, boat-shaped dough with folded edges. Lahmacun is thin, round and crisp, with a light minced-meat topping. So pide eats more like a filled bread.
What does it taste like?
It tastes warm, savoury and comforting. The base is soft inside and crisp underneath. Meanwhile, the melted cheese adds richness. Because the toppings vary, each one has its own character. So every order feels a little different.
Is Turkish pide halal?
Is Turkish pide halal? Yes, when the kitchen prepares it that way. The dough, cheese and meat can all meet halal standards. Of course, a halal kitchen sources every ingredient carefully. At Lalezar, we prepare every dish halal.
